In the past, hedge fund managers like myself had a tremendous advantage over the average investor, simply because the amount of money we controlled allowed us to buy stocks that were representative of entire indices, sectors, or regions. If I wanted some exposure to the Chinese market, for example, I could have bought significant positions in the top few stocks on the Shanghai Exchange.
